How often should a dog have physical exams (considering that the dog is in perfect health)? -Sarah, Lake Lure

Since dogs age much faster that people it is recommended that they have an exam twice a year, especially if they are over 6-7 years old.  Problems that are caught and addressed early are much easier to deal with.  One way to look for hidden problems in older pets is through screening bloodwork to evaluate renal function, liver function and to check blood sugar.  If problems go untreated then the damage to internal organs can become so severe that there are very few treatment options.  Again, early detection is key. -Dr. Greene

My new puppy has bad breath what can I do about it someone told that I could administer Dentamint is that ok? Jerry, Cliffside

Young puppies often have what we call "puppy breath" and while some people find it offensive many other people(me included) love the smell.  It is best to avoid "people products".  Many times animals find the taste very offensive and sometimes there are ingredients that animals should not ingest.  People know to rinse and spit but puppies don't.  The best thing to do is to get a tooth brush and tooth paste made for dogs and start using them when your puppy is still young so that they get used to it.  Also, dog toothpaste is often flavored like chicken!

What should I feed my puppy as she weans? Bob, Bostic

Puppies can be introduced to puppy food when they are 3-4 weeks old.  In the beginning the food should be softened with warm water.  They should not be given regular milk as it can cause diarrhea.  By the time the puppies are weaned at about 6 weeks of age they should be ready to eat a good quality puppy food and in general should eat at least 4 times a day.  As they get older the frequency can gradually be reduced. -Dr Greene

I have a 7 year old cat. Is she too old to be spayed? Kelly, Rutherfordton

A seven year old animal in good health is not too old to be spayed.  As unspayed animals age they are at risk of developing serious problems such as a pyometra(a deadly uterine infection).  Also, older animals that get pregnant have a higher risk of complications which could make a c-section necessary.  Emergency c-sections put the life of your animal in danger.  It is much better to schedule to have your pet spayed or neutered while it is healthy and not compromised in any way.  Plus, spaying and neutering helps reduce the pet overpopulation problem! - Dr. Greene

How old does my puppy need to be before we get her vaccinated? Nancy, Forest City
Puppies should start their vaccination series at 6 weeks of age.  This is very important to help prevent deadly diseases that young puppies are at risk for(such as parvovirus).  Remember, one vaccine is  not sufficient.  Puppies must receive a series of vaccines in order to be safe.  Puppies will also be dewormed on their first visit and checked for other problems such as birth defects that could pose a health risk. -Dr. Greene

What kind of shots does my new kitten need? James, Ellenboro

New kittens need to be examined for the same reason that puppies do.  They are especially succeptible to intestinal parasites that can have deadly consequences if not taken care of.  Kittens should be vaccinated against feline distemper, respiratory viruses and feline leukemia.  Feline distemper is a virus that can spread rapidly between cats and in shelter situations can necessitate the destruction of an entire cat population.  Prevention is the key! -Dr. Greene
